Christmas in July Sale!

The annual Etsy Christmas in July sale has begun! Woohoo!!
Now through July 22nd (some shops run their sales through July 31st) there are some fantastic deals to be had in thousands of Etsy shops. This is a great time to stock up on some early gifts, stocking stuffers or just treat yourself to something special from your Favorites!

A few quick tips for finding the best deals:
  • Include the terms "cij" or "christmasinjuly" in your Etsy search to find shops that are participating in the sale. So if you are looking for a mushroom pendant, try searching for "cij mushroom pendant" and see what comes up
  • Check Shop Announcements for sale information. Most shops will be posting the details of their sale (coupon codes, free shipping, etc) in their Shop Announcements, so if you find an item you like click through to the main shop page and read the announcement before you buy
  • Search the Treasuries. Treasuries are collections of items put together by folks in the Etsy community. It is a great visual way to shop for related items (some are curated by color, topic, category and some are just for fun) Lots and lots of CIJ Sale related treasuries will be created over the course of the next 2 weeks featuring shops that are participating in the sale. So head over to the Etsy treasuries and search for CIJ
  • Check out the Etsy Christmas in July Team. Etsy teams are open to anyone in the Etsy community - sellers and shoppers alike. There is a team set up just for the Christmas in July sale where sellers regularly post details about their sales. (You will find this team here.) This is a great way to get a quick overview of shops that are participation along with their sale details in one place.
Both of my shops will be participating in the Christmas in July sale this year.  Sales end Sunday, July 22, 2012. Here are the details...

At Snuggly Monkey, over 70 items from throughout my shop are 20% off including badge reels, Ouchie Pouches, Eye Pillows, Coasters and mirrors.

Stop by the CIJ SALE section, to view the already discounted items.
{No coupons necessary, prices on sale items have already been reduced}

BONUS COUPON: Free Shipping on orders over $35 with coupon code OVER35 (Valid on US shipping only)

At Snuggly's DIY Supplies, I am offering Free Shipping on orders over $50 with coupon code OVER50 (valid for US shipping only).

Happy Shopping!

{Featured Artist} Kristin from Love In Bloom Boutique

Welcome to Featured Fridays on Snuggly Monkey! Each Friday we chat with a different Etsy artist and take a peek inside their Etsy world. This week we are talking with Kristin from Love in Bloom Boutique
Kristin designs and creates a wide variety of gorgeous bows, headbands, fascinators and hair clips. Her shop is filled with rich colors and beautiful designs that are sure to add beauty to any wardrobe! Let's jump right and and learn more about Kristin and her designs.

How did you come up with your shop name?
My shop name is the result of a year’s worth of feeling like God was trying to get me to take my faith to the next level.  I saw a great outpouring of His love in a variety of ways and I started to ‘Bloom’.

How would you describe your work to someone who asked you “What do you sell/make/do?”

I make accessories for girls and girls at heart.

How did you first become interested in designing hair bows and accessories?
I wanted to do something to help my daughter feel pretty in her school uniforms.  I didn’t want to pay Etsy prices… Now that I make them, I understand completely why prices may seem high to some people.  Handmade goods are time consuming to make and it isn’t fair to ask a crafter to work for a pittance that won’t pay her for her labor.

I started learning by watching a ton of videos on YouTube and experimenting with my own techniques.  I feel that I have come up with methods that now exceed what I have learned and I use them to make really well constructed accessories that are meant to last.

What is your favorite item to create?
This changes often, but my favorite item right now is my ShowStopper Bow (the one I’m giving away) because of it’s simple yet high impact design.

What do you like about being a part of the Etsy community?
The best part of being an Etsian is that I have connected with many different artists and artisans who are very kind.  I enjoy their camaraderie.  I also really love being able to see so many beautiful items in one place and there is a sense of spurring each other on to keep on creating new and wonderful things.

What aspects of your Etsy business do you find challenging?
Getting noticed and winning sales has been a big challenge for me.  I think I did it to myself though, by not relisting as often as I should and not adding items that often.  I am trying to catch up and am also working on my SEO at the same time.  Hopefully, this will be a big help.

Are there any Etsy Apps that you  use and would recommend?
CraftCult {!}, and Craftopolis… but I need to spend some time looking around in the apps section because it’s been a while and I know there are new things to check out.

Do you know of any cool Etsy tips you’d like to share?

One time I included the featured seller in a treasury… The views went through the roof… doesn’t always work though.

Are there any non-Etsy sites you use regularly to help in your Etsy work?
I just started playing around with Sneaky Momma Blog Design.  I am such a novice blogger and she has great design tips that are written for the non-coder {like me!}

Are you a member of any teams?
I am a member of quite a few teams, but the one I have been most involved with is EtsyKids.  They really seem to have things together over there and I have learned SO much from my fellow teammates.  Teams are a great place to get to know people, learn from each other and market together.

As a fan of Inside the Actor's Studio with James Lipton, I've always enjoyed his final 10 questions that he asks all his guests. So, inspired by the questionaries of Mr. Lipton, Bernard Pivo (Lipton's inspiration) and Marcel Proust here are a few final questions for Kristin.

What is your favorite word?  Love
What is your least favorite word? Pick an expletive… I hate them all.
What sound or noise do you love? My children laughing
What sound or noise do you hate? Fingernails on a chalkboard
If you were reincarnated as some other plant or animal, what would it be? A Dolphin
Who are your favorite fictional heroes/heroines? Anne of Green Gables, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Heidi, Charlotte and Charly (of the Chocolate Factory)  I love children’s lit and still re-read my favorite classics on occasion.  My copy of Farmer Boy (Little House series) is so well loved that it finally split into about 5 parts this year.
Who are your favorite heroines/heros in real life? Jesus, Moses, Esther, and Job
What natural gift would you most like to possess? The ability to feel at ease in awkward social situations.
What would you like to be when you grow up? An artist
What makes you smile? When someone enjoys {a meal, craft, or whatever} that I have made

Thank you so much Kristin for sharing with us! Please be sure to keep in touch with Kristin and Love in Bloom Boutique!

{Featured Artist} Robin from Auntie Robin

Welcome to Featured Fridays on Snuggly Monkey! Each Friday we chat with a different Etsy artist and take a peek inside their Etsy world. This week we are talking with Robin from Auntie Robin.
Robin is a talented seamstress who enjoys sewing for children and sells mostly skirts, baby quilts and doll clothes in her Etsy shop. This past week marked the 1 Year Anniversary of Robin's shop - Congratulations!

How did you come up with your shop name?
I have a big family and have been an aunt all my life.  I’ve always loved sewing for my nieces and nephews, so I thought the name fit!

When did you start sewing?
I learned to sew when I was a little girl.  My mother had 5 daughters and taught us all to sew.  We started with doll clothes and went on to making our own clothes.  I started quilting later on when my own daughters were little.

What is your favorite item to create?
I love combining different fabrics in each creation.  It’s so much fun to choose the fabrics and trims.  My favorite thing is to sew up a little skirt based on a storybook character or a theme.

What do you like about being a part of the Etsy community?
Everyone on etsy is so nice!  The other sellers are really kind and helpful.  I can always find great things to buy, too!

What aspects of your Etsy business do you find challenging?

My biggest challenge is finding the time to make all the things I want to make!

How do you advertise or promote your shop?
Promoting my shop is a bit of a challenge for me also.  It took me a while to get into this.  I have joined several teams and recommend that to anyone new to etsy.  Team members are so encouraging and helpful.  It really helps to participate in challenges and any other opportunity to get your shop’s name out there.  Plus it’s a lot of fun!  I really love doing giveaways also.  Treasuries are fun, too!

As a fan of Inside the Actor's Studio with James Lipton, I've always enjoyed his final 10 questions that he asks all his guests. So, inspired by the questionaries of Mr. Lipton, Bernard Pivo (Lipton's inspiration) and Marcel Proust here are a few final questions for Robin..

What is your favorite word?
peace
What is your least favorite word?  impossible
What sound or noise do you love?  Music and laughter
What sound or noise do you hate?  Sports on TV
If you were reincarnated as some other plant or animal, what would it be?  A very spoiled dog.
Who are your favorite fictional heroes/heroines? Ann Marie from That Girl, Nancy Drew, Sarah Crewe, and many more from old books and movies!
Who are your favorite heroines/heros in real life?  Laura Ingalls Wilder, Tasha Tudor
What natural gift would you most like to possess?  Musical talent in singing and playing the piano.  I can’t carry a tune!
What would you like to be when you grow up?  The best me I can be!
What makes you smile?  My daughters, children, music, movies, books, and fabric!!

Thank you so much Robin for giving us a peek into your shop world today! Be sure to keep in touch with Robin by stopping by her shop.

Some final words from Robin...
Just a note to customers, I’m open to special orders!  Please contact me about a different size, color, or theme for a little skirt.  I’d love to sew something special for you!

{Featured Artist} Barbara from Quilted Hugs Bibs

Welcome to Featured Fridays on Snuggly Monkey! Every friday we chat with an Etsy artisan and this week we are lucky enough have Barbara from Quilt Hugs Bibs with us.

Barbara is a talented quilter who makes beautiful waterproof quilted bibs with coordinating pacifier clips.  She has been quilting for over 30 years, and she decided to open an Etsy shop of her own to share her lovely quilted creations with the world a little over 5 months ago. In addition to her love of quilting, Barbara also has a lot of expertise in the sales and marketing arena so she has a lot of great knowledge to share with us. Let's get started!

"Quilted Hugs Bibs" is a great name. How did you come up with it?
Not easily! My husband and I spent several days thinking about how quilting, the warm feeling you get from snuggling with a quilt and how they could be linked to my bibs. After throwing out many names that were either too cute-sy or just lame, we finally came up with Quilted Hugs Bibs. Then I contacted my friend who’s a graphic artist and we spent about 2 weeks going back and forth on how to portray that in my banner. Needless to say, I’m very happy with the results!

How would you describe your work to someone who asked you “What do you sell/make/do?”
I make quilts that just happen to be bibs. Each bib is made from 100% cotton that is laid out carefully inside the bib pattern for the most attractive fit. Then each one is individually quilted on my home sewing machine to highlight the pattern. I then add a NO PVC waterproof liner, cotton backing and finish off with carefully coordinated binding – just like a quilt. To go along with these quilts, I also make pacifier clips in coordinating fabrics that are available individually or in gift sets.

How did you first get interested in sewing and quilting?
I’ve been sewing since I was a teenager, beginning with garments and home dec items. I began quilting in the mid ‘70’s. In 1976 with the US bicentennial renewed the interesting in quilting – I got the “bug”. I used my sewing knowledge, taught myself a lot and then took all the quilting workshops I could afford to sign up for.

What is your favorite item to create?
Other than full-sized hand appliquéd quilts, it would have to be bibs that contain some piecing and/or machine appliqué. I use a paper foundation piecing technique for accuracy and then piece the bib top from there.

What aspects of your Etsy business do you find challenging?
Without a doubt, pricing and self-promotion! I know what my material costs are and how long it takes to make a bib, but how do you put a price on creativity? I’ve been talking to other Etsy members on various forums and reading articles about selling on Etsy. I’ve revised my pricing, edited my item titles and participate in as many promotions I can. I expect sales to improve, it’s just waiting is soooo hard!

What is your marketing “philosophy”?
I’ve been in sales & marketing most of my life – my Dad had his own business and I think the entrepreneurial gene was inherited!

Creating a brand is key, no matter what industry you’re in…arts & crafts are no exception. We all recognize the Coca Cola or FedEx truck, but they still advertise. Just like my landscape design business, I keep advertising in the paper and it may take awhile, but people do call…that gets my foot in the door, then the rest is up to me. It’s the same with the Etsy world times 100!

People come to Etsy to find original and unusual gifts – I’m not sure about other groups, but there are hundreds of shops that sell bibs and accessories…you have to find a way to differentiate yourself from the crowd. Etsy has rules about mass mailings and we all hate spam…that lets out press release type announcements. So you have to find a way to get noticed. By looking at my shop stats, my views go up dramatically in response to being featured in Treasuries…getting involved in Team activities often results in being included in them. You also have to keep up with team discussions.

Any other advertising and/or marketing tips you would like to share?
I wish I had a magic bullet, but it’s important to be on top of your market, make changes when needed and keep making things that will set yourself apart in the market – whether it’s Etsy, an e-commerce site or a brick & mortar shop.

How did you come up with and set up your shop banner and avatar?
By a lot of trial and error. I relied on the Etsy listing/site set up guide to get started, then I started making changes and re-arranging things – I’m still not finished, but I’m getting better.

I started making quilted bibs for my granddaughter, so I used her as my original model. I
wanted to convey that wearing a quilted bib is like getting a hug, so I used a picture of
her wrapped in a quilt I made her for my avatar.

As for the shop banner, I know how important a logo is to consistent branding and I’m
computer savvy, but when it comes to drawing, not so much! I contacted a graphic
designer I met through an online quilting group to create my banner – I knew what I
wanted to convey, but it took Royce (Graphic Threads Fiber Arts on Etsy) to make it
work.

What is your favorite word? Really?
What is your least favorite word? No
What sound or noise do you love? My granddaughter’s laughter
What sound or noise do you hate? Constantly barking dogs
If you were reincarnated as some other plant or animal, what would it be? A Rose
Who are your favorite fictional heroes/heroines? Sam Wheat (Patrick Swayze, “Ghost”)
Who are your favorite heroines/heros in real life? My husband, Randeroo (nickname of course!)
What natural gift would you most like to possess? The ability to draw so people can recognize the subject!
What would you like to be when you grow up? A full time quilt artist with a very successful Etsy shop!
What makes you smile? Cute baby/child stories/commercials

Thank you so much Barbara for giving us a peek inside your Etsy world and for sharing so much great information. Be sure to keep in touch with Barbara by visiting her Etsy shop or stopping by her Facebook page to say Hi!

{Featured Artist} Lindsay from OriginallyMe

It's {Featured Friday} here at Snuggly Monkey, and today we will be chatting with the lovely Lindsay, owner of Originally Me on Etsy.

Lindsay, who is based in South Carolina, says that she specializes in all types of fun and eclectic jewelry and other girlish accessories. She has been crafting for as long as she can remember, but she focused in on her jewelry making about 6 years ago. Let's take a peek inside her studio...

How did you come up with your shop name?
I thought long and hard on this name and "Originally Me" just came to me. It seemed perfect for the funky and unique accessories that I wanted to offer.

How would you describe your work to someone who asked you “What do you sell/make/do?”
I create unique eclectic jewelry and accessories that are all one of a kind. I love mixing colors and all different types of materials to produce a beautiful product.I want to make something that makes you feel special when you wear it :)
I'll admit I kind of want to keep every single thing I make!

How did you first get into making your accessories, and how did you learn to do it?
One year I was looking for something unique to give my sister for Christmas and I ended up making her a box full of earrings. That's when I fell in love with creating pretty jewels. My craftiness is all completely self taught.

What is your favorite item to create? I LOVE it all! A secret little creative thing about me is that I love to paint. You don't really see that in my etsy shop though.

What do you like about being a part of the Etsy community?Being a part of the Etsy community is wonderful! My favorite part is all of the amazingly sweet and talented people I've met through both Etsy and blogging.

What aspects of your Etsy business do you find challenging? Any ideas for how you might overcome these challenges?
To me, the most challenging part of Etsy business is being noticed in the massive amounts of talented artists. My biggest suggestion is to make sure that you have something unique to offer that's not just like what everyone else is doing.

How did you set up your shop banner and avatar? I set up my shop banner and avatar myself. I use photoshop and illustrator to do a lot of my graphics but picnik.com is awesome too and totally free. If you've never tried it, you should!

Do you photograph your own items? What are some of your tips?
I photograph my own items. I think item photographs are SO important to let the buyer see exactly what they are getting. Natural light is a necessity. I think, for what I do, it also helps to photograph my items on a model.

What else do you do to keep your shop looking great? I try to have great pictures, an inviting banner, and I recently changed my avatar to be a picture of me. I know personally, I like to see the artist behind what I'm buying, so I thought this was neat. My items tend to be very colorful so I think that makes my shop pretty.

As a fan of Inside the Actor's Studio with James Lipton, I've always enjoyed his final 10 questions that he asks all his guests. So inspired by the questionaries of Mr. Lipton, Bernard Pivo (Lipton's inspiration) and Marcel Proust here are a few final questions for Lindsay...

What sound or noise do you love?
Weird I know, but I love the sound of rolling a suitcase on that little moving sidewalk thing in the airport.

What sound or noise do you hate?
I am very intolerant of people chewing loudly.

What natural gift would you most like to possess?

I wish I was musically talented. I can play the guitar just a tiny bit, but I wish it just came naturally.

What would you like to be when you grow up?

I'm studying to become an architect, so that's the direction I'm aiming right now... but I'm a dreamer! Who knows where I'll end up.

What makes you smile?

It's the little things in life that make me smile :)

Thank you so much Lindsay for giving us a peek into your Etsy world today! Be sure to keep in touch with Lindsay by stopping by her shop, Facebook page or blog and saying Hello!
